  1. Tame the fly-aways

Long before the ‘slick stick’ there was something super simple like a soft bristled toothbrush paired with hair gel or hairspray. Just simply spray or squeeze some product onto the toothbrush and comb your fly-aways to tame the baby hair. Also, brow gel works a treat too!

  1. Sticky pins

Are your hair pins always making their way out of your hair? Give them a spray with hairspray before putting them into your hair. The hairspray will coat the smooth metal ensuring both stickiness and extra friction to keep your pins in place!

  1. Clean eye lines

Not everyone carries around sticky-tape to ensure a clean eyeshadow line. My favourite hack is to use the clear plastic film that comes with your eyeshadow palette to do the same job. It’s flexible and durable enough and won’t rip like a tissue. It also tends to stick to the face a bit more allowing for a nice clean line.

  1. Bat those lashes

If you are a younger performer looking for fake eyelashes, consider getting ones that are ¾ length or half length. This will save you the trouble of having to cut them. It’s especially important if you are using magnetic lashes, as you need to keep every magnet in place for a secure hold.

  1. Don’t touch the hair!

When you are getting ready, it’s better to wear loose-fitting clothing that won’t get in the way of your hair and makeup. You can wear tie-up or elastic dresses that are easy to wriggle out of, without having to pull them over your head and ruining your makeup or hairstyle. For boys, baggy shirts and shorts are a good option. The clothing you choose should not interfere with your makeup or hairstyle when you change into your costumes.

  1. Double-Duty Makeup

Save space in your makeup bag by choosing products that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a lipstick can double as a cream blush, and eyeshadows can work as a highlighter, brow colour and eyeliner!

  1. SPF is the best… but not on stage

If you’re looking for a foundation with SPF, it’s a great choice for everyday wear. However, it’s not the best option for the stage. The same properties that help your sunscreen reflect UV rays can also reflect the stage lights, resulting in a white glow or ‘flashback.’ Instead, opt for long-wearing makeup that’s sweat-proof, matte, but still hydrating and gentle on your skin.

  1. Won’t you stay

To keep your makeup intact during high-energy performances, use a makeup setting spray or primer. Look for products labelled “long-wear” or “sweat-proof” to ensure your makeup stays put under stage lights. If you’re light on space in your makeup bag, hair-spray makes a good substitute if you can’t pack your setting spray. In a pinch, your favourite BB cream can also double as a primer.

  1. Stop! You’re making me blush

A highly respected MUA told me that especially on big occasions, your foundation should extend to cover your ears. Nervous and stress can naturally make your ears and decolletage go red. There is nothing worse than having a beautiful face and blazing red ears and chest! So make sure not to forget the ears and lightly coat your chest (just be careful it doesn’t rub off on your costumes).

Armed with these essential beauty tips and tricks, you’re ready to steal the spotlight! From taming fly-aways to mastering the art of flawless makeup under the stage lights, these backstage secrets are your ticket to a show-stopping performance. So, go ahead, step onto your stage and shine bright! As always, Chookas!
